Uruguay they lost 1-0 to Iran and stumbled on their first match of preparation for the Qatar World Cup, which was played without an audience at the NV Arena in the Austrian city of Sankt Pölten. The goal of the Middle Eastern team, headed by Carlos Queiroz, was converted from Mahdi Taremi 33 minutes in the second half.
The eleven owners chosen by Diego Alonso were: Sergio Rochet; Damián Suárez, Ronald Araujo, Sebastián Cáceres, Mathías Olivera; Rodrigo Bentancur, Federico Valverde, Matías Vecino, Facundo Pellistri; Luis Suarez and Darwin Nunez.
The meeting was also attended by Guillermo Varela, Agustin Rogel, Matias Viña, Lucas Torreira, Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Nicolas De la Cruz.
Although Uruguay dominated the match, they were unable to exploit their options and with 12 minutes remaining they converted what would have been the final goal of the match.
Beyond the result, the injury of Ronald Araujo – shortly after the start of the game – is what is causing the most concern right now. The Barcelona defender is a key piece and studies should be done to find out the extent of his injury.
The next match of the Uruguayan team will be on 27 September against Canada at the Tehelné pole stadium located in Bratislava, Slovakia.
