The Japanese company updated these data on the occasion of the presentation of the results of the fourth quarter 2022 (from October 1 to December 31), a period in which device sales were 8.22 million units, lower than 11.57 million in the same period of the previous year.

These figures can be read from different perspectives. In general numbers, the success of the console continues to be overwhelming. With 122 million units, the Nintendo Switch just surpassed total sales by PlayStation 4 (117 million) and Game Boy (118 million).

At the moment it has only two consoles above it, albeit by a considerable distance, the portable Nintendo DS (154 million) and PlayStation 2 (155 million).

Can Nintendo Switch become the best-selling console of all time? It will largely depend on how much support the console continues to receive in the form of games over the coming months and years.

An important fact: during the first 6 years of life, PlayStation 2 had fewer units than Nintendo Switch during the same period; Now, PS2 has been in production for 13 years, which is unlikely to happen with the Nintendo Switch.

Great sales, but declining

Another reading offered by the latest update of the Nintendo Switch results is the verification that, despite the excellent sales results, the console reached its peak in 2020. Since then its sales have been steadily declining, in line with the Japanese company’s forecasts.

Early last year, Nintendo announced it was lowering its annual Nintendo Switch sales expectation from 25 to 23 million units.

A situation that repeated itself a year later, as the company just announced it was lowering its Nintendo Switch sales forecast from 21 million units to 18 million for the period from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. .

Another interesting detail regarding the sale of the consoles is the one referring to the specific models of Nintendo Switch. So the latest model OLEDs consolidated as a best seller (+92.5% in the first three quarters of this year), while sales of the basic model (-55.7%) and the Lite model (-37%) fell.

Pokémon Scarlet and Purple sweep despite negative reviews

How could it be otherwise, Pokémon Scarlet / Purple stands out, which despite the bad reviews received due to its poor technical performance has placed 20.61 million units in just over two months. Other big hits are Splatoon 3 (10.13 million) and Nintendo Switch Sports (8.61 million).
