Apple, the tech giant behind the iPhone, is on high alert. Its Vision Pro space computing helmet, whose launch caused a stir on social networks, is now the subject of fresh criticism for a strange phenomenon, which its users have dubbed “Crackgate”.
This device, listed for sale for $3,500 in the United States and unofficially available in Argentina, has started to be sold reveal a surprising crack on the front of the screen.
“I had seen the posts on Reddit the day before and thought people were just being silly, like banging into walls or dropping them. As soon as I took off the front guard, I saw [la grieta]” user u/funnystone64 said in a post on the Reddit forum.
This is just one of many testimonials from Apple Vision Pro users in the r/VisionPro category and other platforms who have reported the appearance of a random crack on these devicesalmost always right in the middle, without having suffered any type of blow.
Many say they are “religious” about taking care of their devices, polishing them and making sure the protective cover is always on. Others say he didn’t even use the device and noticed the crack after charging overnight.
According to testimonies published by the media Gizmodo, Reddit user u/inphenite said he felt incredibly frustrated when three weeks after purchasing the Apple Vision Pro he found a large crack
“It’s definitely not intense use, I used it for 2 or 3 hours every other day at most. I noticed the crack one morning after taking it out of the Apple travel case. It was there all night, with the battery plugged in (but out of the case),” u/inphenite said.
The possible cause of Crackgate
As for the origin of the cracks, the Reddit user himself has created a theory about what is happening, while Apple has not yet released any official statements.
“There is a possibility that Vision Pro has a software bug that prevents it from entering sleep mode, which causes the frame to heat up and expand. This could cause a crack in the weak point of the front glass, u/inphenite said.
In any case, it is not clear what is causing the Apple Vision Pro to break or if it is a problem that only affects a very small group of users.
Additionally, Apple doesn’t treat all Vision Pro owners equally in these cases, just as it does with iPhone failures.
Some Reddit users said the company agreed to repair their devices for free under warranty, while others were told they would have to pay an AppleCare+ deductible to fix the crack. This Apple Vision Pro insurance policy costs $500 and has coverage for two years, although repairs can cost even more. Meanwhile, service charges for “other accidental damage” cost an additional $299.
Far from being satisfied, users continue to share their “crackgate” stories in hopes of raising awareness about the possible problem and that others will demand repairs as well.
