Production of the PlayStation 5, released at the end of 2020, is still a victim of supply chain disruptions associated with the pandemic, and Sony, which is expected to sell at least 18 million copies in the new fiscal year that began in early April, is difficult to meet high demand.

While promising a PlayStation 5 production acceleration this year, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan said Thursday he wanted to stimulate growth a group in video games thanks to games for computers and smart phones.

Get out of the PlayStation

We are not there in a meaningful way in these areas, Mr. Ryan acknowledged in an online presentation, saying he sees these media the opportunity to grow from a presence in a very narrow segment of the gaming market to a full -fledged presence.

Sony wants these new titles to account for nearly half of the internally generated game releases in 2025 and 2026, compared to less than a third at present.

Drawing inspiration from useful video game series such as God of War: Ragnarokreleased on desktop in January, the group looks at desktop sales of US $ 300 million (C $ 383 million) in 2022 and 2023, and sees a future where large elements of our community are more than just consoles.

To diversify its offering across all platforms, Sony also wants to increase its presence in online games aimed at stimulating the long -term interest – and the portfolio – of players by regularly enriching their own additional content.

It particularly relies on the expertise in this area of American game publisher Bungie (creator of the Halo and Destiny franchise), the acquisition of which it announced in January for 3.6 billion US dollars (4.6 billion Canadian dollars).

Titles adults for the PlayStation VR2 and a Netflix series

Sony doesn’t want to leave the PlayStation universe much: Sony’s big boss specified on Thursday that the company intends to have more than 20 titles adults available for the PlayStation VR2 from its launch, the date of which is still unknown.

The headset is a PlayStation accessory for playing virtual reality games. Sony began its adventure in the world of virtual reality in 2016 using PlayStation VR.

Note that iconic PlayStation games will also soon appear on the small screen.

Sony announced that on Thursday Horizon Zero Dawn there will be its television adaptation on Netflix. A series inspired by the car game Gran Turismo is also being produced, but the Japanese giant has not specified which platform it will launch.
