The Longueuil agglomeration police department (SPAL) has tested an avoidance strategy for road safety developed by Laval police, which includes students and their backpacks.
This technology, called living radar, consists of providing backpacks carried by students with a large digital indicator panel. It shows the driving speed of vehicles in school zones after it is captured by radar.
On Wednesday, two SPAL officers accompanied an elementary school student at Marie-Victorin school in Brossard in an operation using one of his bags.
Police believe the Living Radar Project can educate motorists about speeding in school areas and give children special attention.
In Quebec, the Highway Safety Code provides for the application of double fines for speeding in school zones and the loss of demerit points. These areas are indicated by road signs or, if not, it is referred to as Monday through Friday, September through June, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
During the applicable period, the fine for a driver at fault can be up to $ 310, depending on the posted speed and the speed observation. For excessive speeding, penalties for excessive haste apply.
