It’s a strange discovery made by the Perseverance rover on Mars. No, they are not little green men, let alone Matt Damon, but a bunch of strings lying on the ground of the red planet.
The unusual object was photographed on July 12 by one of NASA’s mobile cameras. The quality of the shot, broadcast in particular by CNN, is not optimal and, at first glance, it can look like spaghetti.
However, US space agency officials said it was probably a piece of string that came loose when Perseverance landed. This may come from both the rover and the device that enabled its safe descent to Mars in 2020, according to a spokesperson for the space mission.
They are not the first debris discovered
The rover had never before explored the area where the rope was found. To this strange question, the spokesman raises the hypothesis of the wind that could have carried the piece of rope to this place. In fact, a few days after this discovery, Perseverancia returned to the site where the object had been found, but it had disappeared. However, the team working on the rover will try to study images of the debris and plan to communicate about it later this week.
However, this is not the first time the rover has come across remnants of material from its descent to Mars. The aluminum foil used to control the temperature of the descent device was photographed last June by Perseverance.
