Following the attack on electronic voting machines during a meeting with ambassadors by President Jair Bolsonaro, the UK embassy reaffirmed its confidence in the Brazilian electoral system, including polls, “known for their speed and efficiency”.

The British embassy joins the American embassy three days after the event in Palácio da Alvorada to defend confidence in the country’s democracy and election results.

In a note, he stressed that he would work with whoever was elected in the UK.

“We reaffirm our confidence in the smooth functioning of Brazil’s democratic process and hope that the entire country will be determined to respect democracy through free and fair elections,” the text says. “Whoever is elected by the Brazilian nation can count on the British government to strengthen bilateral relations and friendship between the two peoples.”

On Monday, Bolsonaro received several dozen ambassadors for another attack on the electoral process in Alvorada. The President viewed the meeting as a “response” to Edson Fachin, chairman of the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), where he presented foreign diplomats on the functioning of the Brazilian electoral system.

At Monday’s meeting, Bolsonaro reiterated false accusations of fraudulent evidence, made false claims about the results of the 2014 and 2018 elections in which he was elected, and offended and attacked Federal Supreme Court and TSE ministers.

The outcome of the incident, which was broadcast on Brazilian state television, could be classified as an election crime subject to revocation of the ticket, according to experts heard by Reuters.

Since then, many officials and organizations have reacted to the defense of electronic voting machines, including prosecutor’s associations, the judiciary, federal police, Abin agents, diplomats, among others. For citizens’ rights, prosecutors represented PGR itself, which called for Bolsonaro to be investigated, while Cumhuriyet’s subordinate lawyers stated in a note that the president may have committed a crime of responsibility.
