In Thailand, a new, much less odorous variety of durian is now grown.

Thai growers have discovered a new variety of this much less fragrant fruit: 39 farms are already growing it.

It is the “king of fruits” in Thailand. The durian, well known in Asia, is a fruit with a prickly shell, very tender flesh and known for its very strong nauseating smell. To the point that some countries have prohibited its consumption in public places such as transport or shopping malls, this is the case of Singapore for example.

But a dozen growers in a northeastern province of Thailand have just found a solution to this problem. A new variety of the much less fragrant fruit, called “Pak chong-khao yai”, has just been recognized by the government during a festival dedicated to this fruit on Friday in Chokchai.

39 farms grow non-stinky durian

The new variety even got a geographical indication, reports the Thai newspaper. The nation. 39 farms in the province now grow this durian with less divisive emanations…

“It has a winning combination of sweetness, dry and sweet pulp and no strong smell,” boasts the local newspaper.

A true blessing for the country that exports more than 5 billion dollars each year according to the China South Morning Postwhich makes Thailand the world’s leading exporter of this fruit.
