Fully focused on health metrics, smartwatches are adding new sensors that help people track their wellbeing and keep them healthy. attentive to any emergency. Its future purpose is to save lives, as happened this week with a woman who was alerted by her Apple Watch.

What first drew attention to Kim Durkee were the warnings from his Apple Watch. The first time he thought there was a mistake and the next night he read it his heart suffered from atrial fibrillation.

The next day, the woman, already distraught, decided to see her doctor to see what it was. And if she told him it was nothing, she would simply stop trusting her Apple Watch.

At the conclusion of the studies, doctors confirmed that the smartwatch was correct. His heart was acting strangely why her he had a myxoma, a heart tumor which disrupts blood flow and can cause cardiovascular accidents and death.

It is not the first time that Apple’s smart watch helps an elderly person to detect symptoms which do not manifest themselves to the naked eye and which instead lead to a dangerous inner process.

Without going further, last year the beneficiary of these metrics was Dan Pfau, a 70-year-old man, for whom the smartwatch saved his life twice in the past two years.

The first episode – according to several media outlets – occurred when Pfau was on vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, an island on the east coast of the United States, and fell off his bicycle. His watch detected the incident and automatically called the emergency service.

In practice, the system uses the sensors of the device to warn of a sudden fall and asks the user for a response to know its status. If the person does not respond, she will autonomously ask for help indicating the geographical position so that the rescuers go to the indicated place.

Fall detection is automatically enabled for seniors aged 55 and over wearing an Apple Watch. Children under that age can also activate it from the clock configuration panel.

“What I remember after the accident is waking up in an ambulance,” said Pfau, who was later flown to Massachusetts General Hospital where doctors found a mild brain hemorrhage.

A few months later, Pfau faced an “even more terrifying” incident, as the man has a history of sudden fainting, in the last one he ended up banging his head hard on the wooden floor of his house, starting to bleed noticeably.

The 70-year-old man couldn’t move in pain, so he decided to use the dictation feature on Apple Watch to be able to call his wife, who luckily was staying at a friend’s house.
