This is unprecedented in the world of game consoles: the PlayStation 5, Sony’s next-generation console, will see its price increase by 50 euros. The Japanese manufacturer announced it in a blog post this Thursday, August 25.
No change in the United States
In Europe, and therefore in France, the price of the PlayStation 5 in its classic version therefore now goes to 549.99 euros, compared to the previous 499.99 euros. The digital version -without a disc player- comes out at 449.99 euros compared to the previous 399.99. For comparison, the Xbox Series X from Microsoft, its main competitor, still sells for 500 euros.
These changes are effective immediately and in several other regions of the world, namely Africa, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Canada. On the other hand, Sony indicated that no increase would worry the United States.
An unprecedented decision
Sony’s decision is quite unexpected, in an environment where the price of hardware tends to go down over time. Especially since, since its launch in November 2020, the console has proven to be particularly difficult to acquire.
Indeed, its stock has suffered repeated shortages, also affected by the shortage of semi-components that continues to prevail. The economic crises linked to Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine have also affected the sector, among many others.
The company indicates in this sense “wanting to continue improving PlayStation 5 stocks” and this “despite the situation”.
