Smart watches incorporate more and more health functions to perform daily control on heart rate or rhythm, sleep level or blood oxygen. However, only a few manage to accurately measure blood pressure. The Apple Watch is all ready to include a sphygmomanometer but at the last minute, decided to postpone its incorporation.

The ability to monitor blood pressure could be an important selling point for smartwatches in the coming years, but technology still can’t solve the equation with enough accuracy.

The company has teams already working on an updated sensor and software for the Apple Watch that will determine if a user has high blood pressure, but accuracy has been a challenge during tests, say people, who have asked not to be identified because the matter is private.

The feature is planned for at least four years, but is likely two years away from hitting the market and may be delayed until 2025 indicated from Bloomberg.

The iPhone maker is testing its blood pressure measurement technology on its employees. Its intended approach is not to tell users their specific systolic and diastolic readings, but instead to warn watch wearers that they may have hypertension, i.e., high blood pressure, and that should see a doctor or use a standard blood pressure gauge.

complications
The main drawback so far is that watches with this capability, such as those released by Samsung, still require a monthly calibration with a traditional monitor.

Another of its direct rivals, such as Huawei, has demonstrated watches with such capacity by incorporating an inflatable strap. Last year, Fitbit, owned by Alphabet Inc., began testing pulse blood pressure measurement.

To measure blood pressure, the watch must function as a blood pressure monitor. Today, blood pressure values on sphygmomanometer watches are estimated by sensors that measure the time difference between the onset of the heartbeat and the arrival of the pulse on the wrist .

This estimate depends on the physiology of each person and it is very convenient to periodically compare these values with a digital blood pressure monitor, to calibrate or determine the deviation of your blood pressure monitor.

For some time now, Apple has also had teams trying to add a non-invasive blood sugar control in the blood, which can be of great help for diabetics.

This feature is a few years away and the release year has not yet been assigned. In the meantime, the company has talked about adding more compatibility with third-party glucose meters to the iPhone’s watch and Health app.

While Apple’s blood pressure and glucose features are still far away, the company is working on other updates to be released earlier. It includes new features for women’s health, sleep, fitness and medication management.

In 2022 it may come body temperature sensor, specially designed to inform women about fertility. However, it is unlikely to show true proportions, beyond alerting people whose body temperature is rising more than healthy in the future.
