Hurricane Ian killed an Ohio woman who was in Florida to celebrate her 40th birthday. By publisher WLWT, The roof of the house where Nishelle Harris-Miles was staying with three others – a friend, a cousin and her sister – collapsed and a nail was lodged in an artery of the victim who did not survive.
Nishelle’s cousin, Chanel Maston, says they tried to protect themselves from the force of the hurricane, using sheets to tie each other together, but to no avail. The roof collapsed as the victims kicked the roof to keep the cave from crushing them.
“We started looking for people before the waters really started to rise,” Maston said. “We called 911. We called 211. We called everyone to get us out of there and no one came.”
Chanel deeply mourned the tragic death of her cousin. “She turned 40. She died nine days after her birthday.”
Harris-Miles’ friend LaQuitta Heard said she “had to watch it die slowly” during the flood, driven by strong winds. “I’ll never be the same again,” she said after returning from Florida on Saturday.
