President Joe Biden said on Monday that the United States will impose more sanctions on Iran this week in response to a violent crackdown on “peaceful protesters” in the country.
“This week, the United States will impose additional costs on those who use violence against peaceful protesters. We will continue to hold Iranian officials accountable and support Iranians’ right to protest freely,” Biden said in a statement. Said.
The president said he was “very concerned by reports of the growing violent crackdown on protesters in Iran, including students and women, who are demanding equal rights and basic human dignity.”
“The United States stands by Iranian women and all Iranian citizens who inspire the world with their courage.”
The demonstrations sparked by the death of young Mahsa Amini are entering their third week, after Tehran’s morality police arrest for violating the strict dress code mandating women to wear hijabs.
Biden gave no indication as to what measures he intends to take to punish Tehran.
Iran is already under US economic sanctions, in part because of its controversial nuclear program.
Tehran insists this program is for civilian purposes only, but the international community suspects it is aimed at building an atomic weapon.
