Tragedy in India: 10 dead and 18 missing due to an avalanche in the Himalayas

An avalanche unleashed this Tuesday in the Himalayas caused at least one person to die 10 people. In addition, there are 18 other people still missing, local police reported Wednesday.

“Rescue teams recovered 10 bodies,” Uttarakhand state police said on the social network. Twitter; and added that so far “14 people have been rescued” after the avalanche that occurred on Tuesday.

The avalanche occurred near the top of the mountain, approx 4,900 meters highin the northern state of Uttarakhand.

According to initial reports, a group of mountaineers made up of practitioners from a local mountaineering institute was hit by the avalanche.

Ridhim Aggarwal, head of the Uttarakhand rescue operation, confirmed that a total of 42 members of the expedition were “trapped in the avalanche”: “10 bodies have already been found, 14 people have been rescued and 18 are still missing” , he reported.

“The operation was stopped at night because there was a lot of snow in the area,” the official added.

As anticipated by the head of operations, the search it had to be suspended overnight due to heavy rain and snowfall in the area and only resumed this Wednesday morning.

“We have sent two air force helicopters and the third is on standby due to bad weather,” Devendra Singh Patwal, head of disaster management, confirmed this morning to AFP.

One of the latest reports provided by Indian security agencies reports that five of the survivors were taken to the Uttarkashi District Hospital.
