Salah Abdeslam, the only surviving jihadist of the commandos attacked in Paris on 13 November 2015, tearfully apologized to the victims on Friday, the last day of the trial for the attack.

“I want to offer my condolences and apologize to all victims,” said 32-year-old Frenchman Abdeslam with tears in his eyes.

“I know that hate has prevailed (…) Today I only want you to hate me in moderation.” And he insisted “forgive me”.

130 people were killed in the attacks in Paris and the city of Saint Denis on the northern outskirts of the capital.

Survivors, relatives of victims and investigators attended the hearing, which started in September, and then the suspects were questioned.

During the trial, Abdeslam made his position clear: he is a “fighter” of the Islamic State (IS) group, the French intervention in Syria made the attack “inevitable”. However, he wanted “dialogue” to prevent further attacks.

Abdeslam’s interrogation, which began on Wednesday, ended on Friday with questions from his defense.

During these three days, the main defendant insisted that his aim was to blow himself up in a bar in the French capital, but when he saw young people like him having fun, he “give up”.

“Today, November 13 (the date of the attack), I want to say that this story was written with the blood of the victims. This is their story and I am a part of it. Before I apologize.

“I know you won’t cure them,” Abdeslam concluded, “but if I can help them, if I can help a single victim, it will be a success for me.”
