Poland will erect a barbed wire fence on its border with Russia’s Kaliningrad city, the Polish Defense Minister said on Wednesday.
Mariusz Blaszczak said at a press conference that the construction of the 2.5-meter-high, 3-meter-deep temporary barrier will begin immediately.
With tensions escalating due to the war in Ukraine, he voiced security concerns and cited a crisis triggered last fall when thousands of African and Middle Eastern migrants tried to enter Poland across the Belarusian border, some of whom died.
But a spokesperson for the Polish Border Guard said there was no illegal entry into Poland from Kaliningrad in October.
“The Polish-Russian border is stable and calm. There was no illegal border crossing,” said Anna Michalska.
