Indian elephants swallowed “mahua”, a traditional liquor in the country, and were found unconscious near a village in Orissa, a state in India located next to the Bay of Bengal.

The animals were walking through the cashew forest in the Keonjhar district and found containers with the alcoholic beverage left for the proper fermentation process by the inhabitants of the village of Salipada in eastern India.

When they returned to the place where they had left their mahua pots, the villagers realized that all the drink had been consumed by the elephants. The pots were broken on the floor and empty.

Nearby, the animals rested without showing any signs of concern for what had happened. Residents then tried to wake the elephants, but without success. The forest ranger was called.

The information is taken from the English “The Times”. According to an expert heard in the paper, mahua is made from the fermented flowers of the tropical Madhuca Longifolia tree, which has an alcohol content of up to 45%.

Again, according to the information obtained from the report, the herd who organized the party in the forest consisted of 24 elephants along with the calves.

“Around 6 a.m. we went to the forest to prepare mahuas, and we found that all the pots were broken and the fermented water was missing. We also saw that the elephants were sleeping. They consumed the fermented water and got drunk,” said Sakin. Naria Sethi.

The text published by the website “The Indian Express” says forest department officials had to use drums to wake the herd. Then the elephants returned to the interior of the forest.
