The Berlin Constitutional Court annulled the September 2021 local elections in the German capital, which recorded numerous failures, this Wednesday (16). This unprecedented situation will lead to the holding of new elections.
“Elections in the House of Representatives and district councils have been declared invalid in the entire constituency,” said the presiding judge, Ludgera Selting.
Court officials appealed to the “frequency and severity of voting errors” to justify this unusual decision in recent German history. According to them, the errors are related to “systematic failures in election preparation”.
In the next 90 days, new elections should be prepared with the same candidates, possibly on February 12.
Currently, the city is run by former Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD, Social Democratic Party), who heads a coalition formed by environmentalists and the far-left Die Linke.
Berlin voters were called to the polls on September 26 to elect deputies of the Bundestag, members of the Chamber of Deputies and assemblies of the city’s 12 districts. A referendum was also being held on the possible expropriation of major real estate conglomerates.
But Berlin was partially paralyzed on Sunday (September 26th) by a marathon that often brought together thousands of participants. Many voters complained that they could not vote or had to wait for hours because of these confusions.
The presence of incorrect or insufficient ballot papers and the low number of ballot boxes also prevented different votes from being received.
