A poll by Twitter’s new owner, billionaire Elon Musk, indicates that the majority of social network users voted in favor of reinstating former US President Donald Trump’s account.
Musk’s question was live for 24 hours and closed at 21:47 (Brasília time), with 51.8% voting “yes” to Trump’s return to the platform, while 48.2% said “no” to it. More than 15 million votes were recorded.
The billionaire wrote in the poll: “Vox Populi, Vox Dei”, the Latin phrase “voice of the people, voice of God.”
The former US president said yesterday that he was happy that Twitter was in “smart hands” after Elon Musk took office, but did not say whether he would return with his account on the platform that banned him. He stated that he believes his own Truth Social media platform “looks and works better”.
Trump was banned from not only Twitter, but also Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat in January last year. The decisions came after violent protests and the occupation of the Capitol Building by supporters of the former president, aimed at blocking the election of his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, as the winner of the 2020 election.
Overall, the spread of false allegations and incitement to violence was the platform’s argument to establish the strictest penalties for Trump, who was involved in various controversies about his position on the internet during his time as president. The problem culminated with the announcement this Thursday (7) by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has indefinitely blocked politicians on Facebook and Instagram.
Musk announced yesterday that several suspended accounts on the platform have been reinstated, but added that no decision has yet been made regarding the Donald Trump case.
The billionaire’s announcement came just three days after the former president announced his new candidacy for the White House for 2024, minutes before US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that an independent prosecutor had been appointed to handle the criminal investigations against Trump.
