Indian police have reported to the court that more than half a ton of hashish seized due to a “rat infestation” at a police station has disappeared. The allegation was made by the Mathura police official in the state of Uttar Pradesh after a judge requested clarification on the drug’s disappearance.

According to the local newspaper The Times of India, the estimated value of the cannabis seized in two different cases and stored in two packages, one 386 kg and the other 195 kg, is around R$400,000. In total, 581 kg of cannabis would have been lost.

In a report sent to the judge, the police prosecutor reported that “the goods stored in the police station are not safe from rats”. According to the newspaper’s report, the remaining cannabis that was not consumed by rodents was destroyed by the authorities.

The prosecutor went further: “Because the rats are small, they are not afraid of the police, and the police are not experts in solving the problem,” he told the court.

With the reasoning provided, the judge asked the police to first “get rid of the invasion” and then provide proof that the rats actually ate half a ton of marijuana. In addition, officers were required to submit a report by November 26.
