American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who was sentenced to pay nearly $1.5 billion after denying a school massacre, filed for bankruptcy on Friday, according to court documents seen by AFP.
Jones, a far-right activist, filed for bankruptcy in a Texas court after filing for bankruptcy for his company, Free Speech Systems, in July.
If the court accepts your request, your assets will be frozen and the lien stops.
In 2012, a teenager armed with a semi-automatic rifle killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton (northeast) Connecticut.
At the time, Alex Jones claimed via the Infowars website that the massacre was a staging directed by firearms opponents, and that the parents of the murdered children were “actors”.
The theory went viral, with several family members of the victims suing for libel. They assured that Alex Jones followers were harassing them.
Jones publicly admitted that the massacre actually happened, but was ordered to pay fines or damages of approximately $1.5 billion in two cases.
In documents submitted to the Texas court, Jones claims that he has millionaire debt.
The exact amount of his fortune has been the subject of much speculation, and trials show that he has been selling all kinds of products online, taking advantage of his notoriety in conspiracy circles.
Currently, Jones is banned from posting on Twitter, but continues to appear on Infowars and make headlines, such as Thursday’s interview with rapper Kanye West, in which the artist apologized for Adolf Hitler.
