A congressional committee filed a complaint this Monday (5) demanding the dismissal of Peruvian Vice President Dina Boluarte for alleged violations of the constitution.
At the hearing, Congress’ Subcommittee on Constitutional Accusations approved his dismissal for lack of evidence by a vote of 13 to 8.
Boluarte, a 60-year-old lawyer, was charged with alleged administrative irregularities.
If the process continues, Congress president José Williams will immediately enter the presidency, at a time when President Pedro Castillo faces a new impeachment process in Parliament on Wednesday.
The Peruvian Congress is dominated by the right and has been in conflict with Castillo since he took office in July 2021.
Williams is a retired Army general from the conservative Developed Country party.
The vice president was accused by the Comptroller of serving in a private organization while holding public office, something prohibited by Peruvian law.
According to the comptroller, Boluarte signed documents as head of Club Department Apurímac while already part of the government.
Castillo narrowly won the July 2021 presidential election against right-wing Keiko Fujimori.
Castillo and Boluarte’s terms expire in July 2026.
