Three sources accompanying the talks told Reuters that president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s trip to the United States should take place in January.
Lula was invited to visit by US president’s envoys Joe Biden, US National Security adviser Jake Sullivan and Latin America adviser Juan Gonzalez, with whom he met on Monday. The invitation opened the door to the possibility of the incoming president going to Washington in December—or even as he said he wanted to—or in January, already sworn in.
According to former Chancellor Celso Amorim in the call, Lula explained that December’s trip will still be difficult but still considered, given the series of decisions he has to make in the short term and the next few days.
In talks with assistants on Tuesday, it was agreed that the trip would actually take place in January, and Lula has already been sworn in as president, sources heard from Reuters.
But the date still depends on the talks between the two sides so that both presidents’ agendas can be verified.
