Rescuers on the British island of Jersey announced on Sunday that there is no hope of finding survivors after an explosion in a three-story building last night.
Three people have been confirmed dead so far in an explosion on Saturday in Saint Helier, the capital of this island in the English Channel. The hypothetical cause would be a gas leak.
About a dozen residents are still missing, and it is not excluded that there were visitors at the time of the tragedy.
“We have three confirmed deaths and can say we hope to find more,” Island Police Chief Robin Smith said at a news conference.
According to him, the explosion “probably” occurred due to a gas leak.
With the help of dogs and experts from the south of England, Jersey firefighters spent the night searching the rubble.
Kristina Moore, the prime minister of this British territory, like many other residents, said she was awakened in the night by the sound of an explosion.
“We are absolutely devastated and very worried about those affected and those who lost their lives,” Moore told the BBC.
Jersey’s gas supplier, Island Energy, said it was working with firefighters to find out what happened.
