Iran announced EU sanctions; block will approve new penalties

Iran announced on Monday 12 that it has imposed sanctions on 10 people and six European organizations in response to penalties imposed by European countries in recent days.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that, according to Tehran, Europeans “support terrorist groups and incite violence and terrorism, leading to the violation of human rights against the Iranian people.”

The reference stems from popular protests in the country since September, when the 22-year-old teenager Mahsa Amini died in custody by the morality and customs police for not wearing the Islamic headscarf correctly.

Since then, thousands of people across the country have taken to the streets to demand justice and more rights against women and the regime.

Among those punished by Iran are the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and the radio stations Farda, Free Europe and Zamaneh. Sanctions were also imposed on two German companies accused of collaborating in the production of chemical weapons used in the war between Iran and Iraq in the 1980s.

Those affected by the sanctions are the German Air Force Commander Michael Trautermann, the Commander of the German Armed Forces in Iraq Michael Trautermann, the lawyer of the Iranian People’s Mujahideen (MKO) Holger Kunkel. government, Eric David, French diplomat Bernard Kouchner, German MP Hannah Neumann, former Speaker of the German Parliament Rita Sussmuth and former Vice-President Clavdia Roth, former German MPs Volker Beck and Norbert Lammert, and former German Defense Minister Kramp Karrenbauer.

In response, the bloc’s High Commissioner for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, said the European Union would today announce a “very tough package of sanctions against Iran” due to the suppression of public protests and the deployment of drones. The army to be used in the war in Ukraine.

Before that, last Thursday (8), Tehran had killed young Mohsen Shekari, who was accused of assaulting police officers during a protest in the capital.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who was in Brussels at the weekend to impose sanctions on Iran, lamented the suppression of protests and executions.

“Men, women and youth in many parts of the world are fighting for their rights and freedoms, defying the harshest oppression of authoritarian regimes and dictatorships.

“We are watching with sadness the severe oppression and death penalty against youth and women in Iran,” he said.

The Chancellor also stressed that Italy “reaffirms its unconditional opposition to the death penalty, reinforcing it with the utmost determination against all kinds of violations of people’s fundamental rights and freedoms”.
