The couple, who celebrated their wedding in October, learned that they were not actually married. The confusion arose because the officer, the bride’s grandfather, forgot to submit documents to the registry office to formalize the marriage of Madalyn Boucher and Bill Smitley, who reside in Ohio, USA.

The discovery was made when “newlyweds”, members of the US armed forces, tried to include Bill in the bride’s health plan. To get involved, Madalyn needed the marriage certificates of the two of them, but only found a license – which expired nine days ago – that should have been filed in court to legitimize the union.

Enraged by the discovery, she yells, “We’re not married,” with a glass of champagne in hand, and her husband does the same in the background. Madalyn regrets that the couple spent $30,000 on “a social gathering, not a wedding party.”

The couple’s post was viewed more than 1.5 million times. In a video released the next day, the couple said they cleared the confusion.

“We went to court today and they wanted to make an exception even though we were 10 days late.” locket he was also more understanding towards his grandfather.
