It happened on the Upper East Side, in Manhattan, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the United States. It was 2:45 am local time.
What is striking is that while the woman was on the ground floor of her home, the actor came downstairs in a dressing gown and saw her in the midst of a criminal act. The woman was arrested by officers patrolling the neighborhood.
Police officers guarding the scene saw the 30-year-old woman enter Niro’s residence, a New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesman said. The agents entered and “found the woman inside the room” in full “theft attempt”, added the spokesman.
ABC News quoted law enforcement sources as saying so the woman was putting the presents under the Christmas tree into a bag. NBC News reported that De Niro went downstairs after hearing noises and was not injured.
The DPNY spokesperson told AFP in an emailed statement that the woman is known to have “several arrests for robbery”.
“The woman was taken into custody without incident with pending charges. An investigation is ongoing,” the spokeswoman said.
