The story of Delaney Krings, a 5-year-old girl who was diagnosed terminal brain cancer, He has traveled around the world, after knowing his last wish: to celebrate his birthday with his loved ones and friends. The dramatic disease had given no signs and presented itself from one day to the next, when nothing could be done.
Delaney was diagnosed with terminal cancer on October 31 of this year, and according to doctors at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, USA, the girl is six to eight weeks old. “The tumor already has so many integral parts of his brain that radiation would cause more damage and more side effects,” the girl’s mother, Heather Krings, told US media ‘Today’.
Given the daunting panorama, the parents and the community decided to celebrate the birthday of the little girl, who turned 5 on December 16th.
First, they started with a collection of birthday cards, something that not only spread to their neighbors but also to other parts of the country and the world, thanks to local media breaking the news.
Delaney received so many cards that she was tired of reading them, although it came as a satisfying surprise at the amount of love the little girl received in the messages, which came from all over the world. “There is no way to help her open thousands of cards a day. We take a handful and open them for her. The ones that play music are the favorites,” Krings added.
“How do you tell a 4-year-old that he’s going to die in a month? How do you tell him? You can’t,” Krings said. “She knows a lot of people send her birthday cards because it’s going to be a special birthday.”
Delaney said she knows she has brain issues and is sick, but her infectious smile still gives her parents hope.
“His smile, his laugh, his love, just his sweet personality, his witty replies and his awful one-liners,” Krings said.
While the next few weeks will be the toughest days for the Kring family, they will continue to love and show Delaney what an impact their incredible five years on earth have had on them.
In addition to the cards, the minor also received parcels from Amazon, blankets, bracelets and other details, according to ‘Today’.
Some stars even joined in the congratulations, NFL pro football player JJ Watt shared a photo on Twitter of him holding a congratulatory sign dedicated to the girl. “Happy fifth birthday Delaney! From Arizona, at home in Pewaukee. Hope you had an amazing birthday, surrounded by family and friends,” she wrote in the post.
But that wasn’t the only birthday surprise Delaney got. On Friday 16th a parade was held which was attended by thousands of people, members of their community. Children’s characters such as Mickey Mouse, Olaf and Elsa were also in attendance at the event. The minor, in the company of her family, enjoyed the procession from home, bearing in mind that since her diagnosis she had only spent eight days out of hospital, she explained ‘Today’.
As for the health of the little girl, the parents explained to local media that “her vision was greatly compromised and this took away the little movement she had in her left arm and leg”. Relatives hope that the girl will be able to arrive at Christmas and share the celebrations of the new year with her.
“Luckily we can hug her, talk to her, read to her and enjoy a show in the comfort of our own home. We can cuddle and kiss her while she sleeps at night,” wrote her mother, who has two other children, in a Facebook post.
