Sure, optical illusions like this are often just for fun, but they also have real value to scientists.

These puzzles reportedly help researchers shed light on the inner workings of the human mind and how it reacts to its environment.

Psychologist and human perception expert at Goldsmiths University in London, Gustav Kuhn once told the paper the sun that illusions are important to our understanding of the brain: “We usually take perception for granted and rarely think about hard work.”

The challenge of six women sitting in a bar

Another optical illusion of six women sitting on a sofa left everyone in awe.

In the image, six women are seated in an armchair in a bar, one of them on the right armrest. But to everyone’s amazement, only five pairs of legs are seen.

A Reddit user shared the image online to try and get answers, and it revolutionized the networks, as all kinds of theories started pouring in.

“The first girl is sitting on the second girl’s lap“explained one user. While another ventured: “Number two has its legs crossed, and it’s hidden by the knees.”

The solution came to light when one person figured out the dilemma, and it has to do with the position of the second girl from the left.

They concluded, “His pants are the same color and almost blend. You can see the difference where a little bit of the sock shows over the boot.”

What are optical illusions?

Optical illusions are often entertaining, but they also have real value to scientists. Brain puzzles help researchers shed light on the inner workings of the mind and how it reacts to the environment.

Scientists Kim Ransley and Alex O. Holcombe of the University of Sydney highlighted in 2017 the importance of illusions for our understanding of the brain.

“Visual illusions show us that we don’t have direct access to reality,” the couple wrote The conversation.

“They may also provide insight into the mental processing provided by our experience of the visible world,” they concluded.
