The U.S. Congressional panel investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol Building released its final report Thursday night, arguing that former President Donald Trump faces criminal charges for inciting the riot that caused the deaths.
The House Elections Committee also made public transcripts of many of their interviews and witness statements.
The report, which spans more than 800 pages, is based on nearly 1,200 interviews and hundreds of thousands of documents over 18 months, as well as decisions from more than 60 federal and state courts.
The report lists 17 specific findings, discusses the legal implications of the actions of Trump and some of his allies, and includes criminal references to Trump’s Justice Department and others, according to a summary released earlier this week. The report also lists legal advice to help prevent another such attack.
The committee asked federal prosecutors on Monday to charge the former Republican president with four crimes, including obstruction and rioting, for what they said were his efforts to disrupt the November 2020 election results and trigger the attack on the Capitol.
The House panel previously said in a 160-page summary of its report, “President Trump conspired to undermine the election result, rather than fulfill his constitutional obligation to ‘see the law faithfully enforced’.”
In comments posted on the Truth Social network following the final report’s release, Trump described it as “highly partisan” and “witch hunts.” He said he could not “examine the cause of the protest (January 6), election fraud”.
The Democratic-led panel’s request to the Justice Department does not compel federal prosecutors to take action, but marks the first time in history that Congress has nominated a former president for criminal prosecution. Trump announced that he would run for president again in November.
