Spanish police said on Friday they had arrested US federal police, one of the FBI’s 10 most wanted fugitives, who were staying at a hotel in Madrid with a false identity.

Michael James Pratt, a New Zealand citizen, was sentenced to life in prison in the United States for child pornography, sexual abuse and sexual assault charges.

Police said he was involved in the production of audio-visual pornography by mistakenly recruiting underage girls and young women between 2012 and 2019. He earned more than $17 million from these activities.

Spanish authorities noted that only 57 criminals on the FBI’s Most Wanted list were detained outside the FBI’s jurisdiction, adding that this was the first time in Spain.

Police said the fugitive placed ads online offering “modeling” jobs that turned out to be pornographic recordings.

He paid other women to act as “bait” and convince victims that the recorded material would not be published on the Internet.

Police said victims are sometimes held against their will and forced into sexual practices that they openly refuse to consent to.
