Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro appointed diplomat Manuel Vicente Vadell as Caracas’ new ambassador to Brazil this Friday (23).
Appointed as the Consul General of Venezuela in São Paulo in 2015, Vadell will begin his diplomatic mission after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was elected President on January 1, 2023, in order to restore the suspended relations between the two countries. since 2019.
Vadell’s candidacy, which must be approved by the National Assembly, was announced by Maduro in a post on his official Twitter account.
Following Lula’s victory over current president Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential election last October, the Venezuelan government issued a statement expressing “its best and good will to strengthen ties of friendship together”.
The statement was given because Bolsonaro is one of the few leaders to recognize Venezuelan rival Juan Guaidó as the country’s interim president after he declared himself.
At the time, he alleged that Maduro was re-elected in a rigged election that led to the suspension of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Venezuela.
