(Reuters) – The Austrian Press Agency (APA) stated that about 10 people lost their lives under an avalanche in the Lech/Zuers free ski area in western Austria on Sunday, adding that one person was rescued.
The APA said the avalanche occurred around 15:00 local time (11:00 GMT). According to the report, a large number of helicopters and search teams were deployed shortly thereafter.
“We are doing everything we can to save winter sports enthusiasts,” the Lech administration said, quoted by the APA.
The agency added that about 100 people participated in the search and that rescuers requested headlights so they could continue working in the dark.
Lech/Zuers describes itself as “one of the best ski areas in the world” and part of the birthplace of alpine skiing.
The resort’s website states that the ski area is closed as of 17.00 this Sunday and an update will be made on Monday at 08:00. A spokesperson for the facility could not be immediately reached for comment.
