Ukraine’s head of diplomacy, Dmytro Kuleba, announced that Ukraine plans to demand that Russia withdraw from the permanent membership of the UN Security Council this Monday (26).
“We have a simple question: Does Russia have the right to remain a permanent member of the UN Security Council?” Kuleba (25) said in a televised speech on Sunday night.
“We have a convincing and verified answer: no, it doesn’t,” he added.
Kuleba said that Russia’s participation in the UN Security Council as a permanent member with veto power has already begun to be discussed in diplomatic circles. Other permanent members are USA, UK, France and China.
The Security Council has 15 members responsible for examining global crises and approving sanctions and possible military action. Only five out of 15 are permanent (US, Russia, France, UK, and China) and the other ten occupy alternate two-year terms.
New world order?
Five permanent members with veto powers that can prevent any decision, II. It reflects the power dynamics of the end of World War II.
A few countries advocate reform of the organisation, and some criticize the lack of representation, such as the absence of permanent members from Africa and Latin America.
The Council is helpless against a single member with veto power, as Russia invaded Ukraine in February and diplomats were content to read statements.
US President Joe Biden called for enlargement of the Security Council in September to make it “more inclusive”.
