One year ends and another begins. We are leaving behind a 2022 which marked the definitive return “to normal” after the pandemic. And we’re about to start 2023 with the best possible expectations.
Hoping it is the best year possible In any case – and since we are all a bit superstitious – we tend to put into practice rituals and traditions that are handed down from generation to generation.
In case you don’t know them and want to make them; Or if you already practice them but want to know what they symbolize, here’s a “good luck guide” for 2023.
New Year’s rituals: what to do on December 31st to have a good 2023
1- Throw the salt and sweep it out
This is an ancient tradition that should be put into practice on the morning of December 31st free the house from negative energies and leave it very “clean” to start the year.
First, we put a handful of coarse salt in every corner of the house and behind the main entrance door. After, we sweep all that salt from the inside out the door.
When all the salt is at the entrance, we collect it and throw it into a pot or place with earth. Once finished, we light a white candle.
2- Brand new underwear… Red, pink, yellow or green?
Ritual with their own characteristics, for some brand new underwear (trousers -or panties- pink and underpants) has a pagan origin linked to procreation and fertility. For others it is related to the practice of believers who lit a pink candle on the third Sunday of Advent as a symbol of the joy generated by the coming of Jesus into the world.
The truth is that this rite has passed through families from generation to generation. Although some believe that clothes should be given at Christmas, everyone agrees on the importance of release them on the 31st. And they say wearing new lingerie to start the year is a… advancement of prosperity and good luck.
Now, as for the color there are some differences. Tradition speaks of colorful underwear rose as this color represents fertility, love and promotes dialogue and self-esteem. and also of redthat brings us passion, fire and energy.
However, they can also be colored garments yellow if what interests us in the year is to achieve economic prosperity; blue, if we try to have peace, few problems and protection; or greenif what we prioritize for the year ahead is health.
3- Dress in white
Color related to purity, peace and absolute renewal, it is advisable to wear white (or, at least, wear a garment) to absorb the good vibes they will give us new and positive energy throughout the year that begins.
4- Eat the 12 grapes at midnight
It’s difficult, we know. Between the toast, the greetings and the joy of hearing the chimes announcing the beginning of a new year, things get complicated. But eat the 12 grapes at that moment, so one after another and in a minute, it is very important for be lucky for the next 365 days.
Or so the tradition says. Although the origin of this custom is not known with certainty, each grape is believed to represent a month of the year and a wish for them.
5- “Burn” the (and the) past
on white paper we have written everything we didn’t like about the coming year, what we still had to fine-tune or what we want to change. We fold it in the center and, on the outside and without taking any risks, we we burn. This symbolizes that we are ready to start over with renewed energy.
Then we can write on another piece of paper everything we want and we try to achieve this goal 2023 which begins; we keep it in a drawer and every beginning of the month we read it again to see what we have managed to achieve and what remains pending.
