An air tragedy occurred in Nepal on Sunday when a plane of the local company Yeti Airlines, with more than 70 people on board, crashed in the Pokhara district, about 200 kilometers west of Kathmandu, while trying to land.
The plane had departed from the Nepalese capital and was flying an internal route. There are no details yet on the passenger situation.
“There are 68 passengers on board and four crew (…) Rescue is on the way, at this moment we don’t know if there are any survivors,” said company spokesman Sudarshan Bartaula.
Krishna Prasad Bhandari, spokesman for the Nepalese army, specified that the bodies of 16 victims have been recovered, according to local media reports.
Furthermore, they pointed out that the incident occurred in the Seti River gorge, near the Pokhara airport.
According to Jagannath Niraula, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, the Yeti Airlines ATR 72 aircraft took off from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport at around 10:32 am and was due to land 27 minutes later in Pokhara.
“Rescuers have already reached the place and are trying to put out the fire. All agencies are busy putting out the fire and rescuing the passengers,” said Gurudutta Dhakal, a local official.
