New Zealand Prime Minister announces his resignation

“For me the time has come,” he said in a meeting with members of his Labor party. “I have no energy left for another four years”he has declared.

Ardern came to power in 2017 in a coalition government and then led his centre-left party to a landslide victory in the 2020 election, but his popularity and that of his party have declined in the latest polls.

In his first public appearance since Parliament went into recess in December, he told Labour’s annual meeting that he hoped to find the energy to carry on as leader. “But I couldn’t do it,” he acknowledged.

He also announced that the next general election will be held on October 14 and that until then he will continue as a member of Parliament.

“I’m leaving not because I think we can’t win the next election, but because I think we can (win) and we will,” he said.

Ardern said so His resignation will take effect no later than February 7. and that the Labor caucus will pick a new leader in three days.

Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson has denied running.

Ardern has assured that there are no secrets behind his resignation.

“I am human. We give all we can until the time comes. E the time has come for me“.

“I’m leaving because with such a privileged job there is a great responsibility, the responsibility of knowing when you’re the right person to lead and when you’re not,” he said.
