A newborn died of suffocation in the early morning of January 7-8 at the Sandro Pertini Hospital. the mother, youafter 17 hours of laborfell asleep on the baby while breastfeeding, which resulted in the death of the newborn by suffocation.
As the father explains in an interview with Il Messaggero, the hospital staff didn’t let the mother rest after the birth and although the woman asked to let the baby rest, they didn’t.
The 29-year-old woman realized the situation once they had already taken the baby to try to revive him, as explained by the hospital to the parents. He immediately called his father but when he arrived he was already dead. The man says he was only able to hold his son in his arms for two moments from when he was born, on January 5, until his death.
According to the father, they chose the Pertini hospital because his partner and mother of the child was born there and wanted to give birth in the same place as his mother. But after giving birth she was left alone because “none of us could be with her due to the Covid rules,” she says. “She was very tired, the baby wouldn’t let her sleep so he passed the nights without closing an eye. But my son was fine, apparently healthy. Now we are waiting to know the outcome of the autopsy and we have entrusted the case to a lawyer “, he adds.
“We both asked for help. She herself had repeatedly asked the ward staff to take the little one to the nursery for a few hours so that she could rest. I could not do it anymore. But the answer was always ‘no, you can’t'”explains the father.
Along the same lines, she stated that she could not accompany her partner due to the strict protocols against COVID-19 that the health facility has, so she was left alone with the newborn, and that every time they asked to be accompanied by the child for a few hours, the hospital replied that it was not possible.
The woman broke her pouch at 4 am and was in labor for 17 hours. The family decided on the Sandro Pertini Hospital because it is the hospital where the woman was born and they wanted her to be born there. At the moment they explain that the case is in the hands of the parents’ lawyers and awaiting the results of the autopsy.
“We have read many comments on the internet from other women, some who had also given birth in Pertini, who complained of being left alone with their newborn children. All exhausted from childbirth, unable to properly care for a child.”says the father.
“No one can give our child back to us, but we don’t want other parents to experience the same nightmare as us.. It is not right for women to be alone in the wards after giving birth. If it hasn’t happened to other moms, it’s because they were lucky,” said the father of the deceased newborn.
According to Corriere della Sera, the hospital asked the mother for a drug test because she had been found fast asleep.but it came back negative. Furthermore, a center operator assured that there was a shortage of personnel that night but that several nurses, the pediatrician and the anesthetist intervened to try to save the child’s life.
