A new episode of police violence shocked the United States on Friday after five officers were charged and jailed in the death of a 29-year-old black driver named Tire Nichols who was attempted to be pulled over for a traffic violation in early January.
The Memphis, Tennessee attorney’s office decided to charge the officers, who are also black, with murder, battery, injury and kidnappingafter reconstructing the sequence of events that it ended with Nichols’ death on January 7. All officers had already been fired from the state police.
The incident has rekindled the flames of indignation in the United States, especially among the black population, in light of what everyone describes as a new case of police brutality. On Thursday, President Joe Biden issued a statement calling for the “rapid, complete and transparent investigation” of the case.
Anger and indignation should grow as state authorities publish videos of the comparison between the police and Nichols this Friday night. According to a police official consulted by The New York Timeswhat you see in the recordings is “absolutely horrendous“.
