A video of police officers shooting a black man who, with both legs amputated, tries to flee from officers has caused a stir in California, just as the United States grapples with new episodes of police brutality.
Several policemen are being investigated after the man’s death, who had half of both legs amputated and who allegedly attacked another person with a knife.
Police in Huntington Park, California, confirmed in a statement that some officers (the number was not specified) were granted administrative and salary leave pending the conclusion of the investigation.
The incident occurred a week ago but in the last few hours the video went viral which shows how a man, armed with a large knife, he flees from two policemen who point a gun at himtrying to run dragging his semi-amputated legs, while trying to support himself in the wheelchair.
Though not seen in the video, cops ended up shooting the man – identified by his family as Anthony Lowe, 36 – who died instantly.
The Tire Nichols case
The case has many differences with the death, which occurred in early January, of Tire Nichols, an African American who died after being beaten by the police, who had stopped him for an apparent traffic violation, in Memphis.
However, Lowe’s family also demanded that the incident be investigated a possible case of abuse by the police is analysedlike the one allegedly carried out against Nichols, whose funeral was held on Wednesday in Memphis in the presence of the vice president, Kamala Harris.
This Thursday, the President of the United StatesJoe Biden meets lawmakers from the black community at the White House to discuss how to reform the police following the death of Nichols, whose brutal beating was recorded by numerous security cameras.
pursuit and shooting
As explained by Huntington Park Police, the Lowe’s event began after officers came to help a person who suffered “a fatal stab wound resulting in a collapsed lung and internal bleeding.”
That person described the attacker as a black man who climbed out of his wheelchair, “ran up to the victim without provocation and stabbed her in the side with a meat cleaver” and then fled in his wheelchair.
Police found the suspicious suspect a few streets away and stopped him, but ignored the officers’ orders and threatened them with knife.
The policemen used two stun guns to try to stop the suspect but missed.and after the threats continued, there was “a shooting involving an officer,” the statement said.
The man was shot in the upper torso and pronounced dead at the scene, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
“The way they killed my son, they killed him in a wheelchair with no legs,” Anthony Lowe’s mother Dorothy Lowe said at a news conference on Monday calling for justice for her son.
The family and several close friends have asked Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon to file charges against the officers involved.
