The American Gaming Association predicts that one in five adults will bet on Sunday’s championship game of American football, which pits the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs,

This calculation includes both legal bets and those made with illegal bookmakers and informal bets between friends or relatives.

The expected figure doubles more than last year, as the sports betting market continues to grow.

Kansas, Ohio and Massachusetts joined states allowing legal betting this year for a total of 33 plus Washington, the capital. Maryland has allowed online betting, but last year it only allowed in-person betting for the Super Bowl.

More than half of adults in the United States live in a district where sports betting is legal.

“Each year the Super Bowl seeks to emphasize the benefits of legal betting: bettors are turning to the benefits of the regulated market, and sports leagues and the media are seeing an increase in interactions and legal operators are driving the profits of which bettors they need”. Hard data supports predictions of a record betting market this year. GeoComply, which traffics online betting for the entire US market and verifies that a customer is in an area where these bets are legal, said it recorded a total of 550 million geolocation points in the postseason between January 14 and 29.

This represents a 50% increase from last year, and the group expects record volume during the Super Bowl.

An AGA survey found bettors are divided, 44% back the Chiefs and an identical percentage bet on the Eagles.

The Eagles were 1.5 point favorites Monday in FanDuel, the company that provides the odds ratio to the Associated Press.

The range of bets on offer is vast, from the most basic on who will win and how many points to the total points scored in the game.

There are also bets on individual players, such as if the Chiefs quarterback, patrick mahomeswill throw two or fewer touchdown passes, or how many rushing yards the Eagles running back will accrue, Miles Sanders.

There are also unusual bets such as whether the coin toss at the start is heads or tails; if the final result was recorded in a previous Super Bowl e to the color of the Gatorade that is tossed onto the winning carriage.
