Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced in his State of the Union address in Budapest on the 18th, warning of escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war and calling for peace talks to end the war immediately.

Prime Minister Orban of the pro-Russian right-wing government delivered his State of the Union Address to the people on the same day, saying that this war would continue for several years, and that everyone in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) would “let the end of the war except Hungary.” We are on the same side,” he pointed out.

Prime Minister Orban said in a nationally televised speech that the European Union was already at war with Russia. Although it is an indirect war, they say that providing weapons and training Ukrainian military forces is like participating in a war.

“Europe is now almost at the final crossroads of being drawn into war. It’s like walking on very thin ice,” he said.

“Hungary will maintain its original position and maintain economic ties with Russia, although this will become increasingly difficult,” Orban said.

He argued that while Hungary’s position was the only exception within Europe, it would in fact be a very common one in the rest of the world.

He said Europeans are tired of having to pay high prices under (Russian) sanctions. Therefore, he emphasized that a new European Union government should be set up and put in the same position as Hungary.

Prime Minister Orban said that 2022 was the worst year for Hungary since 1990 due to war and inflation.

“We will keep our distance from war,” he said. Hungary will remain an island of peace and security. At the same time, it is the government’s job to break inflation, and I will achieve this without mistakes.”
