The 38-year-old man also assaulted the 12-year-old girl and then told her to get out of the house, Gonzalez added. The minor took a 1-year-old girl in her arms and fled.

“She ran out of the house with no clothes on,” to a neighbor’s house, who called the Galena Park police.

Both girls were hospitalized for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, according to a statement from police, which are already investigating.

Gonzalez said the man’s girlfriend was the mother of the 12- and 19-year-old girls. The eldest was the child’s mother and was pregnant. The girl was not at home at the time of the attack.

The sheriff said the cause of the shooting is under investigation.

According to a database of Associated Press/USA Today, there were three weeks in January in the United States six outright murdersthat is, when there are at least four dead, excluding the perpetrator.

Six people were killed in a mass shooting Friday in Mississippi and there were others in which fewer people were killed, such as Monday’s one at Michigan State University in which three people were killed.
