G7 and EU ambassadors to Argentina condemn Russian invasion and reaffirm support for Ukraine

“This Friday marks one year since the Russian Federation’s groundless and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. As G7 ambassadors accredited to Argentina (Japan, Italy, Canada, France, United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany and the European Union ), we want to reiterate to the Argentine public opinion that Russia’s war of aggression threatens not only Ukrainebut also to the Charter of the United Nations and its principles”, reads a note from the group to which the European representation has joined.

“As such, it is a matter of peace, security and stability that concerns us all. If this fact is not addressed, the unlawful aggression would be absolved and the risk of other countries facing similar aggression would increase,” they argue.

“Throughout the year, the G7 members, together with international partners, supported Ukraine in the form of bilateral, regional and multilateral actions, always holding Russia accountable for its actions. We wish to acknowledge the constructive role it has played Argentina as President of the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2022″.

For the ambassadors, “the G7 members are committed to providing Ukraine with financial, military, humanitarian and development assistance and we will maintain our strong solidarity to mitigate the effects of the invasion”.

Furthermore, the G7 members reaffirm their full support for the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. According to international law, in particular the UN Charter, Ukraine has the right to defend itself against Russian aggression and regain full control of its territory.

“We, the G7 members, have imposed and will continue to impose economic sanctions against the Russian Federation, targeting individuals and entities, inside and outside Russia, who provide political or economic support to Russia’s illegal attempts to alter the status of the territory of Ukraine”. they added.

The ambassadors say that over the course of this year, G7 members have addressed the disinformation campaigns of the Russian Federation, raising awareness and sincerely denouncing the events that have had an impact on public opinion, both in Argentina and in the world.

“Once again, the Ukrainian people have shown their resilience and courage. This unjustifiable war has forced the displacement of millions of Ukrainians, mostly women and children, and claimed thousands of lives. G7 members and countries that like-minded people, like Argentina, we have responded not only with assistance, but has also provided refuge to the victims of the Russian invasion,” they said.

The G7 and the EU accuse Russia of “deliberately using energy and food as weapons, knowingly accepting that the world’s population will suffer from the worsening supply situation. Russia’s war of aggression it has caused global bottlenecks in the supply of oil, gas, grain and fertilizer”.

The G7 members “urge all countries that support a rules-based international order, including Argentina, to ask the Russian Federation to cease this aggression, which is a flagrant violation of international law. and human rights law”.

Finally, they stress that “any global, just and lasting peace can only be achieved if it complies with the UN Charter and international law. One year after Russia’s large-scale unprovoked war of aggression, G7 members are more united than ever for Ukraine”.
