The US administration of Joe Biden criticized North Korea’s recent provocations with ballistic missiles, such as intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), for causing instability in the region.
In a regular briefing on the 22nd (local time), U.S. Department of Defense deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh criticized North Korea’s recent ICBM and other ballistic missile provocations as “an attempt that is not beneficial to the region.”
Deputy Spokesperson Singh criticized North Korea’s ICBM, saying, “North Korea’s series of ballistic missile tests are not only not helpful in the region, but also continue to cause instability.”
He also mentioned the recent South Korea-US-Japan drill in the East Sea, saying, “Recently, we conducted a three-way defense drill with South Korea and Japan,” adding, “This better shows our commitment to the region and to our partners and alliances.”
Regarding the ROK-US extended deterrence exercise (DSC TTX) announced by the South Korean Ministry of National Defense, he said, “There isn’t much additional information to provide, but we will be able to share more details later.”
The State Department also voiced criticism of North Korea’s ballistic missiles. State Department spokesman Ned Price said that day, “North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs are not only a threat to the United States and our people.”
“(North Korea’s ballistic missile provocation) is not only a threat to our treaty allies, Japan and South Korea, but also a threat to overall peace and security in the region,” spokesman Price said.
He also said, “This is not something that China wants,” and “It is not something that China would encourage.” However, China defends North Korea on the international stage, such as the United Nations.
In this regard, Spokesperson Price pointed out that among the permanent members of the UN Security Council, there are countries that do not act responsibly. It can be interpreted as remarks aimed at China and Russia.
“These are the countries that raised their hands and voted for resolutions passed by the Security Council,” he said.
He also said, “We remain committed to a diplomatic approach toward North Korea,” and “urged North Korea to engage in constructive dialogue.” He also said, “Our promise to defend Korea and Japan is still ironclad.”
