It has been speculated that one of the secrets to the longevity of Jeanne Louise Calment (1875-1997), who was recorded as the longest living woman in the world, was because she had a lot of money. It is explained that the fact that she was less stressed because she grew up in an affluent family from an early age had a positive effect on her longevity.

Dr. Jean-Marie Robin, a French demographer, met Calment before she was alive and heard about her life and studied the relationship with longevity, CNBC Make It reported on the 21st (local time). Dr. Robin said that Calment lived to the age of 122, although it was an extremely exceptional ‘luck’, but said that there were three reasons that affected his longevity.

First of all, the wealthy family environment was cited as the biggest reason. According to Dr. Robin, Calment was born into a bourgeois family in southern France. Although it was not common for women to be educated at the time, Calment said she attended school until she was 16 years old. She also took private lessons in cooking and dancing until she married at the age of 20.

“The factor that helped her live longer and be less stressed is that she never worked,” said Dr. Robin. “Calment always had someone at home to help her. She explained that it was because there were always people in the house who would cook or buy things for them.”

Calment is said to have started smoking at a relatively late age. “As a teenager, Calment grew up in a bourgeois family, so smoking was absolutely impossible for Calment, but after his marriage, his husband encouraged him to smoke,” said Dr. Robin. She tried her hand at smoking at this time, but thought it was no good, so she gave up immediately. Calment started smoking in earnest at the age of 112 when he entered a nursing home.

Calment was active in social life. Since he did not work, he had a lot of free time, so he spent most of his time attending social events, such as meeting new people. She also traveled frequently with her husband, and she says she discovered a fascinating world at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Calment, meanwhile, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest-lived man, living for 122 years and 164 days. The oldest living person is Maria Brañas Morera (115) from Spain. Regarding the secret to longevity, he recently said, “A regular daily life, good relationships with family and friends, and communion with nature” and “stay away from poisonous people.”
