The United States has expressed its intention to continue pursuing a presidential statement condemning North Korea’s ballistic missiles at the UN Security Council.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in an interview with Radio Free Asia (RFA) on the 1st (local time) regarding the chairman’s statement condemning North Korea’s ballistic missiles, “Russia and China continue to block any output from the Security Council.” .
“But we will continue to make efforts,” he said, expressing his intention to continue promoting the chairman’s statement. Russia and China have been defending North Korea’s provocations at Security Council meetings, blocking additional resolutions and joint statements at the Security Council level.
In response, the United States is pursuing a presidential statement instead of a Security Council resolution or a joint statement. Although the chairman’s statement is not legally binding like a Security Council resolution, it can be adopted if a majority of the members of the Security Council agree.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also proposed a chairman’s statement at an emergency meeting of the Security Council on North Korea on February 20, condemning North Korea’s resumption of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) provocations and advocacy by Russia and China.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield continued to criticize North Korea’s provocations even while attending the House Appropriations Committee hearing that day.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield said, “In the Security Council, we are dealing with threats to international peace and security, such as North Korea’s missile launches, instability in Haiti and the conflict in Ethiopia.”
“Regarding North Korea, we are working hard to enforce tough UN sanctions to make it harder for the regime to build nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles,” he said.
He also said, “I hope that without our leadership, China, Russia and other countries will frame the United Nations and the world in their totalitarian image.”
He also emphasized, “At the United Nations, we are encouraging allies and partners to respond to conflict, hunger, climate change, human rights abuses, violence and humanitarian crises.”
