The UN has accused Daniel Ortega and his officials of “crimes against humanity” in Nicaragua

A group of experts of the United Nations (UN) accused this Thursday the Nicaraguan government, led by Daniel Ortega, of having committed “Crimes Against Humanity”according to a published report.

The Nicaraguan president Daniele Ortegahis wife and vice president, Rosario Murilloas well as high commands of the national police and other Nicaraguan state bodies have been denounced for perpetrating serious and very different violations of the rights of the population, amounting to crimes against humanity.

The document of the Group of Experts on Human Rights on Nicaragua, released in Geneva, mentions extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions, torture and arbitrary deprivation of nationality and the right to remain in one’s country.

This conclusion was reached by the group of human rights experts created by the United Nations to investigate and gather evidence of the situation in Nicaragua since the 2018 citizen protests.

“They are perpetrated widely and systematically for political reasons and constitute crimes against humanity of murder, detention, torture, including sexual violence, deportation and politically motivated persecution,” said independent expert Jan Simon, quoted in a statement .

And he added: “The Nicaraguan population lives in fear of the actions that the same government could take against them”.
