Gyeon Ja-dan (甄子丹‧60), a Hong Kong action movie star, said, “Hong Kong’s democratization protests are riots.”
On the 28th of last month, the American men’s magazine GQ published an interview revealing Gyeonjadan’s pro-Chinese tendencies.
In an interview with GQ, Gyeonjadan said that he is 100% Chinese and is a “proud Chinese” who recently renounced his US citizenship.
Regarding China’s development, he said, “Most people outside of China don’t see it (China’s modernization) until they arrive in China. It falls far short of (China),” he said.
He also said that he gets angry when Western media focus on negative stories about China, saying, “The BBC and CNN never talk about it.”
Regarding the pro-democracy protests held in Hong Kong in 2019 (demonstrations against the extradition law in Hong Kong), “It was not a protest, it was a riot,” he said. “I was there (at the time of the protest), and I had many friends who were there.”
“A lot of people may not be happy with what I’m saying, but I’m speaking from my own experience,” he added.
“If you look at all the video works, from big Hollywood movies to TV, Apple, Netflix, etc., all these action movies have been influenced by Hong Kong movies in some way,” said Gyeonjadan. “Hollywood has ignored Asian actors, but over the years, Hong Kong films adopted the visual techniques and metaphors of
“Hollywood’s offer is no longer appealing,” he said. “If I can’t be creative, it’s not worth my time.”
Born in Guangdong, China, Gyeonjadan moved to Hong Kong with his father at the age of two. After moving to Boston, USA at the age of 10, he became an adult and worked as an actor in Hong Kong. He became very popular with the ‘Ip Man’ series and appeared in Hollywood films such as ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, ‘Triple X Returns’, ‘Mulan’, and ‘John Wick 4’.
