After more than four years of work, the Ministry of Culture of Peru has completed the restoration of 13 kilometers of a mythical Inca trail, which was the scene of rituals and which has great historical and architectural valueOfficial sources confirmed this Friday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Culture explained that this street was declared a National Cultural Heritage in 2010 for “its mythical, historical, architectural and archaeological importance”.
The road enabled and which is already available to the public, joins the section between the Qorikancha and Wanakauri hills, in the Cuzco region. Its restoration and enhancement involved an investment of 10 million soles ($2.6 million).
The director of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cuzco, Maritza Rosa Candia, explained that during the Inca empire this street was a pilgrimage route in the Warachikuy ritualduring the religious festival of Qhapaq Raymi, which took place on the summer solstice.
The Warachikuy rite was an official military ceremony held once a year which marked the transition from adolescence to adulthood in males.
Precisely, Wanakauri or Huanacaure hill is one of the points with more history of the Inca empire and at its summit, at an altitude of 4,089 metres, is an archaeological site.
“The archaeological investigation of the ritual path has allowed to highlight embankment and slope support walls, stone stairways, panoramic landscape observatories, surface and underground drains, as well as hydraulic channels, fences and a polygonal structure with astronomical connotations and ceremonial”. , indicates the technical report made by the inhabitant of the building, Claudia de Olarte Ramírez.
Furthermore, the excavations have brought to light construction technology and road typology in other small stretches, fragments of cInca and pre-Inca pottery, lithic material, metal and organic remains such as charred corn kernels.
8 kilometers of the ritual route were also recovered, restoring walls, water channels, stairways and fences.
Likewise, information signs and rest areas have been implemented to enhance the tourist experience.
The ministry highlighted that during the restoration process, people living in the communities surrounding the route worked on this project and that the qualification of the road “will allow the promotion of tourist activity in these neighborhoods of Cuzco”.
